HERO'S OF D.I.Y. - no.1 - "Jean Jacques Burnel "

Pub Rock, the birth of do it yourself music. From 1970 to 1976 there was no Rock'n'Roll on record, you had to make it yourself and play it in shit pubs. This is where The Stranglers (and the Sexy Pistols) came from. And as a result, cometh the most influential Bass player of aaaalllllllll time, the one and only Jean Jacques Burnel.
Combining aggression, melody and fluidity. Burnel's arpeggios, runs and barracuda bass were an integral part of the initial Stranglers sound. And also demonstrated to the legions of frustrated wanna-be guitarists, that you can make great tunes with the Bass as a lead instrument; therefore binning off the need for Chord structures. One string at a time was all those spotty youths needed to join the musical revolution of the late 70's. Peter Hook, a bass player of equal stature in the DIY sphere of influence , would never have thought of this before hearing the Stranglers. Then took it to its logical zenith, and launched a tidal wave of Hook Clones onto a unappreciative public.A truly unique sound, played through several fucked up speakers, coupled with an innovative 'Lead Bass' technique, make J.J. Burnel one of the true musical Hero's of DIY. He made the Illusion of musicianship seem simple and accessable.
Another valuable contribution this bilingual Francophone made to DIY culture, was his excellent, studio downtime, high budget DIY sound emulation, that was the "Euroman Cometh" album from 1979. This could have easily been a tape from some underground label in Scunthorpe, but no, it was on United Artists, by a member of a hit group. It even reached a surprising number 40 in the uk charts!?

Great to see some love for Mr Burnel and The Stranglers when they are wrongly reviled in so many quarters. Nice one :)

Nice to see JJ getting some attention. For the live CD that was later reissued with Euroman Cometh and for other Burnel rarities, see my Burnel megapost over at knowyourconjurer.blogspot.com.

Cheers, Dave Sez.

Yes Slacker, I too reviled the stranglers in my teens, too old weren`t they(such are teenagers eh?). But with age I realised that they were brilliant, up til La Folie that is. But always was I attracted to the bass sound/style of the great JJ.
